COMPLIMENTARY & ALTERNATIVE THERAPIES FOR PAIN, BOOK REVIEW...

Complimentary & Alternative Therapies for Pain  - Your guide to over 50 treatments for pain relief, by Barbara McLullich.

Why Barbara wrote the book in her words...

'If, like me, you find that some alternative treatments can help with your pain, albeit through a placebo effect, then this book may be of interest to you.

Back pain affects 80% of the population at some point in their lives. Mine as most of you will know, started in my late Twenties, with extremely debilitating low back pain. Treatment in the first years consisted of physiotherapy and manipulation by an osteopath and chiropractor, but eventually surgery was the only option.

After undergoing four major spinal operations with numerous complications which included a life-threatening episode, you begin to realise that time is a gift. Many a day I’ve felt despair, rage and profound disappointment that I could not do certain jobs. My life has changed so much over the years that I can hardly believe it.

I was also diagnosed with Fibromyalgia (an incurable, painful condition which manifests itself in fatigue, insomnia, stiffness, IBS and pain throughout the body) and I realised that something had to be done when, after manically tidying up my house, I felt bereft at the lack of mess to clear up. Time was the key - how I used it and with whom I spent it became very important to me.

So I decided to write this book in my quest to find an alternative/complementary therapy that can help with my pain. Although I have tried many types of treatment, mainly for my back pain, I have not actually had every treatment listed in this book.

It lists over 50 treatments for pain relief. The list is “by no means exhaustive” but provides a genuine
attempt to offer information to those who may be reaching desperation in their quest to find a solution to chronic spinal pain'.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM A SCALP MASSAGE...

A scalp massage is not only extremely relaxing but it can also stimulate the nerves and blood vessels beneath the skin while calming muscle tension around the head. Tension is felt within the head and neck, so scalp massages can be very effective as a stress reducer.

The therapist will use their fingers to rub the base of the scalp beneath the hair, the sides of the head, the forehaed, chin, hairline, neck, shoulders and spine. Some use warm oil to massage into the scap. It is one of the most relaxing massage treatments available.

REFLEXOLOGY TREATMENTS...

Reflexology is a holistic treatment based on the principle that there are areas and points on the feet, hands, and ears that map via the nervous system to corresponding parts of the body. When pressure is applied to these areas and points it stimulates the movement of energy along the nerve channels, and helps to restore homoeostasis (balance) in the whole body.

There are 7000-7200 nerve endings in the human foot, and each of these is a reflex point that corresponds to a body part. Reflexologists know which are of the foot corresponds to which part of the body by learning maps of the feet.

Reflexology is an excellent whole body treatment, and can be used both to prevent illness and to encourage the body to heal. It is particularly useful for stress and related disorders, emotional disorders, digestive problems, circulatory disorders, menstrual problems, insomnia, fatigue and most chronic and acute illnesses.

Reflexology is available at our salon for £20.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM A PEDICURE...

noun
noun: pedicure; plural noun: pedicures
  1. 1.
a cosmetic treatment of the feet and toenails.
"a pedicure will make sure your feet look their best"

Firstly, any old nail polish (if you have any) will be removed.

Next, your nails will be filed then placed into a foot massager filled with warm water. There will usually be some oil or moisturiser in the water to help rehydrate your skin.

While one foot is soaking, the beautician may gently scrub away any old skin which will then have softened up.

You will then enjoy a lovely exfoliating foot care scrub which ensures any stubborn skin is removed.

You will also get a lovely lower leg and foot massage then cuticle cream will be applied to soften the cuticles up.

An orange stick will then be used to push back your cuticles and any further filing of your toe nails will be done.

Finally, its your turn to decide which type of polish you fancy from either a gel finish, a French pedicure or just a couple of coats of nail polish.

If you don't feel like dozing off by this stage then just wait until you get home. Enjoy..........

HOW TO MAKE YOUR PERFUME LAST LONGER...

We all love to wear perfume but not all perfumes last long. A good tip on how to make your perfume last longer is to put an unscented moisturizer on first and then spray on your perfume a few seconds later.

There is a lot of alcohol in perfume which when sprayed on just evaporates quickly. However if you spray it onto a moisturized skin it sticks much better.
